Vi har omsider fÃ¥et . Der følger jo telefon med, sÃ¥ jeg har indkøbt en topsmart drejeskivetelefon. Den fungerer fint og ringer enten med et højt, klassisk ring — eller med en diskret brummen. So far, so good.

Til gengæld kan den selvfølgelig ikke ringe op. Den sender ikke de rigtige signaler, kan man sige.

Christan Schmidt’s to the rescue. For at ringe op, taster man blot nummeret ind, sætter højttalervolumen cirka midt pÃ¥ og holder mikrofonen tæt ind til koppen pÃ¥ hovedtelefonerne. Det kan jo ikke være nemmere. (vil undersøge markedet for en af de der holdere fra film som politiet lægger telefonrør i under aflytninger — har ingen ide om, hvad de hedder.)

Ironisk nok siger min mobiltelefon (som jeg testede med) .

1. Wonder whether you have a telophone connection in your office at all
2. Ask the super of the building (let’s say he doesn’t know)
3. Call Fullrate, ask if they know what to do
4. Order the connection to get things rolling
5. Ask super to install a telephone connection
6. Watch electricians run cables
7. Listen to electricians admitting they don’t exactly know where to connect cables
8. Call Fullrate for a TDC guy to connect cables properly
9. Wait 10 days
10. Get up early to wait for TDC guy
11. Put up a straight face when TDC guy points to gray box on wall (not the one the eletricians connected), saying “there’s your line“
12. Inform super that electricians are no good
13. Wait till friendly TDC guy makes sure eveything is fine with the real telephone connection
14. Beg TDC guy to leave something that will allow you to connect your Fullrate router to the actual line
15. Thank TDC guy for leaving wires hanging in mid-air
16. Find regular office tape and ctt off the end of a telephone cable — connect
17. Test connection by writing a silly blog post on how to get a brodadband connection in a lot of steps
18. Wait for electricians to come back and tidy everything up

Too hard to choose something but think SoundBlaster Pro, MS-DOS, 486DX2, Winsock, OS/2 Warp and much, much more.

The slightly longer version would go something like: I like Nokia phones, I like the Symbian stuff. And I’ve never owned a Nokia that wouldn’t selfdestruct, slowly but steadily within about a year. They’re fine for the first few weeks, then they spin into their suicide cycle: Everything starts to slow down, using the camera takes ages, sending text messages starts to be a pain etc. etc. Random shutdown, auto-assigned random profiles, general instability. So I start not trusting my phone.

And every time I buy a new one, I think to myself that this is the biggest, most expensive phone I’ve ever had. And every time, I feel liked I’m being held beta-hostage at gunpoint.

You wan’t a feature-packed phone? Then pay up and accept that you only get some of them, not at the same time — and you can’t choose what and when yourself. Oh, and the basic phone features probably won’t work.

So I decided to accept that doing a software upgrade would destroy whatever I had on the phone, yadi-yadi-da and connected to the required PC. But as XP is a useless piece of where’s-my-driver crap, of course the Nokia software and/or XP suddenly encountered cable connection trouble halfway. Rendering my phone useless. Which I had been warned could happen if I myself did soemthing stupid along the way. But which of course also is the case if, say, Nokia decide to use, say, Windows XP as their preferred way of repairing (no, not ‘upgrading’ — _repairing_) their products on my time.

Which is more or less like trying to fix a broken turd with vomit and forcing me to watch for an hour…

Having our chief programmer set up my Apache server on my laptop while I was sipping coffee in the local cafe gave a strange feeling of relaxed productivity by proxy.

From getting the link to my cursor started flying around my Mac took less than a minute. Nice.

See, last.fm uses has iPod submissions on by default…but looks for a playlist named ‘Recently played’. On my Danish OS language Mac, that playlist is called ‘Senest afspillet’. Bummer.

I’ve changed it, hope it’ll work.
