Normally I tend to think that everything is potientially funny and that you can make jokes of almost everything. This bit from Details magazine sort of had me laughing as well, but I’m not sure it’s all that funny… Or put another way; I can see why some members of the Asian community — or of the gay community — feel somewhat offended.

If you’re Asian, there’s an online petition against ignorance, if you’re gay, let me know of any online activities (petition wise, that is — I get my bit of strange blog searches already, thanks). In any case, while a joke is a joke, you might want to save those for the pub instead of publishing them in mags…

Rally to Protest details’ “GAY OR ASIAN“
FRIDAY APRIL 16, 11:30AM-1:30PM, 34TH ST & 5TH AVE.
Come to a peaceful demonstration to protest Whitney
McNally’s “Gay or Asian” feature in the April edition
of details magazine! On FRIDAY APRIL 16 from 11:30am
to 1:30pm, a coalition of Asian Pacific Islander
(API), lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT),
and API LGBT groups and their allies will gather in
front of details’ offices at 7 WEST 34TH ST.
We come together in coalition because McNally’s piece
calls on hurtful, stereotypical images of LGBT,
working class, and API people under the guise of
“humor.” From the lead-in that denigrates working
class Asians (“One orders take-out sushi, the other
delivers it”) to the use of suggestive phrases that
objectify and exoticize the Asian male body (“the
plumpest eel,” “sashimi-smooth chest,” and “bonsai
ass”), the racism, classism, and homophobia that
details unapologetically uses to sell its magazines
must be challenged and addressed. While this piece
has and continues to prompt responses from a broad
base of concerned individuals and groups across the
country, we believe it’s important to come together
now in a show of unity and collective power.
We DEMAND for details:
To implement diversity and sensitivity trainings for
all editors and writers.
To issue an apology that concedes its wrongdoing in
publishing a piece that leads to the further
stigmatization of API, LGBT, and API LGBT people.
To represent the full diversity of the API community
in a fair, accurate, and inclusive manner.
The co-sponsors of this protest — Asian Media
Watchdog, Gay Asian Pacific Islander Men of New York
(GAPIMNY), and a growing list of others — ask you to
stand with us side-by-side in support of these demands
in protest against a details’ feature that dehumanizes
people of color, hypersexualizes gay men, promotes an
ignorance of the API LGBT community, and caricatures
the working class and immigrants.

I’m sorry, but I thought it was hilarious as well. You have to admit, a lot of Asian guys do dress pretty “gayly”. But i don’t see why it has to be offensive? What’s wrong with being gay? What’s wrong with being Asian? Chill out people; stop being offended by everything!
to yiwei: you bring up an important point about the relevance of categorizing identities that i wish more people explored. but i feel like this incident just perpetuates ignorant assumptions more than it pushes the boundary re: issues of identity and categorizations. i mean, it’s no big news that what little exposure asian men have in american media portrays them in an asexual and not-very-desirable light (there are no hot asian-ameican studs on TV, film..!), and hispanic and black men tend to be streotyped as hypersexual creatures…mister rico suave teaching women salsa, rapper/baller surrounded by hordes of scantily clad women. i know i’m generalizing a tad, but u get my drift. and besides, the only real asian-american role model my brother has is bruce lee (!). jackie chan is a
middle-aged martial artist who cracks jokes in bad english.. jet li is more an asian than an asian-american star… yao ming has yet to make a very strong impact on the american public. if i were to ask you what asian-american male pop culture icon there is today, what would u answer besides william hung? ultimately the real problem is that many asian-american males are very strongly affected by the way they are portrayed and perceived by the american media. i know of guys who pump iron merely to make a social statement. there are guys who feel the need to prove their masculinity and even anger in destructive ways because their existence as “men” in america is overlooked and even scoffed upon. sure there is the more existential angle of “why even prove your identity? why does it even matter?” but i feel that american society needs to comb out a bunch of webs before such a movement would be effective.
well if you follow the magazine there is a section every month, last month was GAY OR JESUS, another was GAY or ITALIAN so it just a camparison. I have lived in Asia 10 years and bought the magazine and showed it to my friends from at least 10 asian countries and most thought it was hilarious. I think it also has to do with a person educational, economic and humorisitic background. I am latino and if they did the same I would probably laugh at it. People should not be too serious especially in those kinds of magazines. I can understand if it appeared in TIME or NEWSWEEK but in instinct means nothing
The article is bang on. As a european alpha male. i think most urban asians look gay as hell. Its no different with white males. Metrosexual = gay in my book. For a culture that historically bred great warriors i find it to be a slap in the face to the great samurais to see a fellow asian male walking around with a ladies purse.
