[DK] Avisspildtid

MS interface preview

Everyone’s linking this…me too: xBetas @ PDC 05 — preview of the new MS interface.

It’s better — no doubt about that — and there are probably a lot of UI improvements in there that I can’t appreciate properly by looking at the screenshots. But the looks part of it… Hmm, I dunno… Somehow it just seems that MS-interfaces always end up looking cluttered. Whether you like the graphical implemtation or not doesn’t matter to me. I’m a Mac-user and though I preach a lot, I’m nowhere near religious. If MS comes up with something better, they get my vote. But why do the cram all that stuff in there? In fonts that always look a bit washed out… Have to see it to make up my mind, but so far I’m not at all impressed…

[DK] Sound Stage

Projektets deltagere: Lawrence Englisch (Au), Carl Michael von Hauswolff (S), Ken Ehrlich/Brandon LaBelle (USA/DK), Rune ¸chting (DK), Jonas Olesen/Christian Stadsgaard (DK), Jacob Kirkegaard (DK/DE).

Men hvordan?

Input i kommentarerne — adgang til løjerne gennem anders at pollas dk.

Train ticket tracks kids

Smart Mobs: Train ticket tracks kids:

When a kid passes through RFID-enabled train ticket gates using an PiTaPa train pass, which is an RFID card, an SMS message is automaticaly sent to their parents.

Oh, pretty please — don’t implement this down at HawaiiBio. I’m sure my mom could do without an SMS saying “your son just spent some of the money you gave him on naked titties”…

Mint stats

Never got round to get Shaun Inman’s previous stat tool running, but recently I discovered he had something better cooking: Mint.

The demo was (and still is) disabled due to…well, success, so I just went for ‘purchase’ straight away, eager to finally get an overview of the traffic to this site.

You can learn a lot from reading your log files, but this is damn well designed, has all the information I want — and was a breeze to set up. At $30 it’s not cheap, but so far it’s well worth it. An evolving plug-in API should keep Mint fresh.

On the downside: It turns out — again– that I’m not famous. And that half the traffic is still coming from horny gay people from Spain. Which would be fine by me if they found what they were looking for. I doubt it, though…

Also: Mint launch on Flickr.

Responsibility and Web Standards

Asterisk: Web Standards Are Your Responsibility.

Got me thinking. I haven’t been preaching web standards and the usual css stuff for quite some time — I have a tendency to end up being ‘rebel without a cause’ as it seems I sometimes enjoy the shouting and persuading part a bit too much. Feeling for something is fine, preaching to the choir is not just as fine as the preaching doens’t cause any real world-change. Or so I thought.

I can’t believe we’re still having these discussions. But the man is absolutely right. As long as our part of the world is inhabited by a lot of people that — for good or not-so-good reasons — are more focused on keeping their jobs and earning their money than producing something decent…we all lose.

I’m not here to point fingers, especially as I’m sure we all deliver stuff once in a while that doesn’t qualify as top-notch-digital-2.0-type stuff. But it is our responsibility — just as it is the responsibility of whoever’s hiring the coders — to make sure the projects meet certain standards (in both meanings of the word).

Companies allowing crappy stuff to pass will end up losing. Coders specializing in crappy stuff will end up being left behind. The fascist approach would be to get some way of calling the crap. Sites not having to meet goverment-standards often don’t get tested against the right things. I believe more in the pride-approach:

Hang in there. Keep educating people and keep showing them examples of how Web standards can add real value. It’s a tough job, that’s for sure, but it’s up to you to make sure it gets done

If everything else fails, make sure your client/boss understands that he just insisted on getting less.

I næste uge: Jyske betjente optrevler lorem-ipsum-sammensværgelse.

¦re E. Arnold.
Jeg udbad mig eksempler pÃ¥ kulturberigelsen? Men der ER mÃ¥ske ingen?
Mvh
Niels B. Larsen

¦re Niels B. Larsen

Hvis du gerne vil have flere eksempler, sÃ¥ læs Benny Andersen.
Med venlig hilsen og glædelig jul
Elisabeth Arnold

Men gode stilpoint herfra!

Laptopzombies

Metroblogging Berlin: Laptopzombies:

But what’s really frightening me is the view of people sitting in a row behind their laptops staring on the screens. Looks like the digital version of Shaun of the dead to me.

It’s pure luck that I’m not in the picture in the blog post… One of the girls in the bar made a tongue-in-cheek complaint to the room the other day, that there wasn’t much conversation involved with her job when everyone was just working their laptops. One of the laptops guys just looked up, smiled and told her she probably was working in the wrong place then…

Weltverbesserungsmassnahmen

Went to Central Kino yesterday to catch Weltverbesserungsmassnahmen (World improvement measures), a documentary-style movie following nine private initiatives trying to make the world a better place — including Ampel e.V (training car owners to respond better to traffic lights), Privatinitiative für Äesthetic (sorting parked cars by colour) and Aktive Krankenversicherung (people training to perform surgery in order to save on health insurance).

I found it a tad too long as the points made were, however funny, pretty simple, but the idea is great. The site accompanying the movie has more ideas for improving the world, most of them not as funny as the ones featured in the movie, though.

Consumer. Act!

Ok. I’ve had it. I’m using decent browsers and various leave-me-alone plugins, but nevertheless I sometimes get popup, stupid noisy flash commercials etc. Using tabbed browsing and an aggregator set to just open links (in the background) in whatever window’s at the top of the stack means that I just had to close 15+ windows with useful information (now marked as read in my aggregator) as I couldn’t navigate. Thank you Dell.

I could decide just not to visit sites utilizing these techniques — or I could complain my ass off to the companies buying into that form of advertising. Which is what I plan to do (although I might go for option #1 as well).

They are breaking my web experience, consequently making me wanna spend less time browsing the pages where they could grab my attention — if they did in a respectful manner, that is.

Would I buy stuff from a street vendor that started off by making me trip over his leg? Would I buy a shirt from a guy that started shouting directly in my face as I entered the store? No way in hell.

So I’m thinking of putting up a form, easy to fill out with the details of the type of advertising (banners mostly), time and place. And a drop-down for selecting where to send the complaint. A standard email, something like:

Dear Dell, I’m sure you mean well, but your advertising is messing with my user experience and make me want to make an effort not buying anything from you.

On [date] at [website] I was treated with your [type] advertising [product/service] which [how it was annoying].

You treat me disrespectfully? As a consumer, I can only voice my opinion / punish you by not buying. Which is what I’ll do if you don’t stop this stupid form of shouting. This message is crossposted to my own weblog as a way of making my peers realize that they shoudn’t buy anything from you.
Best regards [name]”

I honestly think it’s lack of respect buying into a space in way that messes up what I was planning of doing. Dell for instance just made me waste 3 minutes as I now have to go through a list of links, find the relevant stuff, open it in new windows. Because they wanted to sell me something I wasn’t even prepared to buy.

You want to benefit of being on the web? You better learn the etiquette.

Danke!

Toiletrolldanke

I have no idea what this does on a sheet of toilet roll paper. But I guess it’s nice. Thank yous are per definition nice, no?

Maybe it’s a measure to make sure people (especially men who are known to look a bit guilty when leaving the little boys room — or so I hear) are at ease when leaving the toilet; a way of saying “you’ve done a good job”.

Some words of caution for people thinking of doing similar posts:

- When at a public place and having just made a good camphone shot, try not to look too happy when leaving the facilities. You have a good reason to be smiling — other people don’t know that. And you might not want to send out a signal like that — in a situation like that.

- When transferring your picture to your laptop, make sure Bluetooth is on — otherwise you might end up sending the picture to someone else if you aren’t careful. I came this close to sending this picture to someone named Grit — from a cellphone that has my blog url as its Bluetooth name.

And yes, there are sooo many ways I could have staged this photo to make it look even more strange — but I went for the clean, family-friendly version. You can thank me later.

Freaking the photo lab staff out

Something occured to me as I was picking up a few prints of some digital photos I took at a lab at Alexanderplatz: Why don’t you — the next time you’re at a lab — snap some pictures of the staff when they aren’t looking? Then upload the files to their server and order some copies. Ideally 100+ so they’ll think you’re completely mad.

Imagine going to the printer to pick up…pictures of yourself.

Please note: This might be illegal — and in any case probably not the most clever thing you ever did. But then again, if you’re not suspicious-looking enough to get noticed by law-enforcement while commuting, here’s your chance to meet a handsome policeman.
