¸tter beats Rasmus but takes a beating from Lady Sovereign. And from PJ Harvey.

Yup, like women and beats in kinda the same way: Dirty and loud…

Acme — the slim

When not in use, my 12″ Powerbook lives in its padded home aka the Acme ‘the slim’ laptop sleeve/bag. It’s a tight-fit sleeve-ish laptop bag with room for nothing than the laptop itself and a few slim items in the front pocket. Apart from its simple design, the advantage of the Acme is its small form factor, which makes it the perfect hybrid between a laptop sleeve and an actual bag. I use it as a sleeve inside my Chrome bag deep forest iii comparsa download mp3 but every once in a while, I head off to a meeting without the need for anything than my laptop. And while it’s actually a bit too metro for my liking, it is kinda handy that it has a shoulderstrap and a set of leather handles for carrying.

All in all, it looks a bit too slick, but is incredibly practical compared to its fellow sleeves.

Chrome messenger bag

Ok, so I’m a bag fetishist. Or rather, I like whatever I’m carrying to be well protected while not causing me any unneccessary pain. And you know, the right tool for the job and all that. And with the whole being mobile and carrying lots of gadgets around-era going on, why not share this overlooked part of full blown consumerism as well. In any case, I like bags and have quite a few…

First, a quick look on my most trusted friend, the always-on-my-bag Chrome Citizen messenger bag. I’ve had it for almost two years and apart from general wear and tear and the beatiful camo pattern going a bit pale where it touches the back, I have to say it’s still as good as new. It doesn’t do anything fancy; one big compartment, a small pocket on the front for keys and other small items and the usual place to put your pens — as if anyone ever had the need for that. It’s waterproof; the big compartment is surrounded by some rubbery fancy material I’m sure has a classy name I can’t remember and is flowing freely within the Cordura outer shell.

The strap is heavily padded and has an extra strap for holding it in place — a feature that can function as extra security as well, should someone decide to push the big trademark buckle on the front. It’s incredibly convenient not having to take the bag over the head all the time, so if you just get to unbuckle it yourself, it’s kinda clever.

I’ve had my hands on a lot of other messenger bags that of course is the obvious choice when you go around by bike a lot (go Copenhagen) but this is by far the most comfortable. One thing it doesn’t do, however, is being the usual shoulderbag. The strap simply isn’t long enough and is shaped in a way that doesn’t make that an option — which is fine by me; it’s not healthy anyway. The adjustment of the strap (which by the way is seat belt-ish) is pull-in-one-end, release-by-pulling-the-metal-ring-at-the-other-end which works fine but maybe isn’t as smooth as the Timbuk2 heavy-duty plastic buckle. A matter of taste, I guess.

It’s big enough to hold a 15″ laptop (I’m carrying a 12″) but isn’t padded enough for that use — you’ll need a seperate laptop sleeve for that (more on that later). Due to it’s shape, it holds quite some stuff but quickly gets uncomfortable if you don’t pack it right. Ideally you should always have a laptop or similarly flat against your back, which is pretty much the only thing I can think of that woudl go against recommending this rugged piece of equipment. So it’s hereby recommended.

(I’m thinking of doing more reviews / recommendations. If you think that’s a stupid idea or just consumerism at its worst, leave a comment.)

[DK] Blomst

This just in:

Style deliverables

When I do stuff web development-wise, I usually design, cut and code — or come in just after some poor print designer delivered the PSDs.

Now I’m doing a job where I’ll do the design bit — but where someone else will do the actual implementation. So now I’ll have to get the message with regards to styling across to someone else, something I can complain about endlessly when graphic designers fail to do that properly when handing over stuff to me.

Style guides are a genre in themselves and I suspect they take a lot more time to do thatn one might think. So I thought about the most precise way to describe styling I know. Turns out it’s the css itself.

Why not just do the css for the various bits that need styling yourself? It’s accurate, saves time as your time is spent anyway and it allows your techie to just copy and paste — and if you’re good at css, chances are you’ll do a better job than the techie.

There are obvious disadvantages:

While the overall styling of typography is easy to do and probably won’t interfere with the way the implementation itself is done, styling of sections etc. can prove difficult as far as naming is concerned. Just as you can’t skip making notes on gutters and other overall layout decisions you don’t know how are implemented.

On the other hand, if you stick to meaningful names (as you should), as a minimum it will be easy to understand — best case it can work as a platform for the actual code running the site. In any case the techie will have to understand your code anyway and should be able to just use as much of it as is possible. A few Photoshop notes which explains what’s what should be plenty of information.

So the person cutting up your design gets all the measures whereever he needs to go in anyway, all the overall styling information is provided ready for use by you as css (no more looking at every single font for size, color etc.) and your style guide job is limited to putting in notes on the names you’ve used in the css and some info on overall thoughts on grid and concept.

In situations where you work with the same developers over and over, this could prove even more useful as you get to know each other’s coding style.

Not exactly rocket science, I know — but I’ll try and give it a spin.

Me me me meme

There’s another meme wave these days.

I’ve been tagged. Before responding, let’s have a look at this thing. I’ve come across it numerous times the past week and was thinking about posting this anyway.

People either:

1) Respond, tag someone
2) Pull the plug
3) Remix the meme

I’m not sure what I think of these things. It’s all in good spirit — some of them doesn’t offer much value, though. This, I’m afraid, is one of them.

The pattern is something along “teenage jobs, current job — movies everyone knows — childhood home, home abroad, current home — tv shows everyone knows/don’t watch tv — places everyone goes on vacation — food everyone knows and eat — sites everyone uses all the time — in bed/someplace warm/some store with gadgets — people everyone that reads your blog knows”.

So I’m with Matt Haughey on this one: “I looked over the stuff and realized I could do the four things for friends of mine before I even read their responses”.

Trying not to come across the ass that I really am, here are my answers. If you would like to answer these yourself, consider yourself tagged. If not…

Four jobs I’ve had:
Paperboy
Dishwashher
Personal assistant for handicapped person
Digital hippie

Four movies I can watch over and over:
I try not to, there are so many movies I haven’t seen yet.

Four places I’ve lived:
¸dby
Amager
Nord-Vest
Vesterbro

Four TV shows I love to watch:
Whatever’s on after 22

Four places I’ve been on vacation:
London
Berlin
Rome
Havnsø

Four of my favorite dishes:
Proper pasta
Everything Indian
Rich soups
Sushi

Four sites I visit daily:
Google
23
Flickr
del.icio.us

Four places I’d rather be right now:
Some other cafe
Berlin
London
Rome

If you think you’ve learned something valuable and that I’m special, say yay — and get a life ;-)

Long Bet: “In a Google search of five keywords or phrases representing the top five news stories of 2007, weblogs will rank higher than the New York Times’ Web site.”

Konklusion: Don’t listen to bad advice.

This week’s recommendations

Stuff I’ve found recently:

Drowned In Sound podcast — indie stuff.
NYUB podcast — Not Your Usual Bollocks. Just what it says; electronic dance music and energetic rock.
Zoe’s Radio Show — 15 year old girl with better taste in music than you’ll ever get (if you’re into post-rock, alternative stuff)
Weekly list of mashups and remixes (good shit), news about music and popular culture.

The Danish podcasting scene is getting active as well; ¸tter, Podkammeret, ¸hns on Mimertalks, Beocast and new kids on the block Genau [via Froda] and Affenkaffen — and probaly some I just forgot, sorry.

See also podcast.dk and keep your ears out forr upcoming podcasting events. Heck, I might even do some.

The sound of silence

Ok, enough. Blogging’s gotta start again, I miss conversation, sharing logging.

New plan is: Shorter posts without all the blabbering. Inspiration: Winer, Tveskov, Pind etc.

Here goes:

Interesting download section over at SatuGO (bouncing ball camera not in production yet); stuff for journalists — and for bloggers. (less interesting is their use of frames, bah).

Henrik Moltke is opening up his archives (and working on opening the archives of DR, I hear — respect). Interviews for other to work with, including transcripts. Rocks!

Avistid (which I had promised myself not to bash until we got our act together, so shoot me) has caught my attention again. Without knowing it, I’ve seen their flash banners for the last couple days on pretty much every newspaper site, advertising a new movie. Not until today the coin dropped; it’s not a motion picture, it’s the new Avistid online movie. Or rather, it’s the new movie to be released in three days. So far, the only thing they’ve picked up from blogging is the “we’re gonna do this cool thing in a while”-part the rest of us wished e’d never gotten into. On the positive side, they’ve cleaned up their site a bit. On a Mac? No problem.

Berlincast

Berlincast.com: Sounds and Noises from Berlin.

Fine, simple idea: Sound tours / recordings of places in Berlin. I thought of doing it myself when I was in Berlin last summer, but never got around to actually post something. Got a few recordings but was in the equipment checking phase at the time. Got stuff from Copenhagen planned — stay tuned.

Related: 100% Pure Hamburg, audio from the city.

Podcasting is nice, but there are so many shows and conference recordings. That’s fine by me and I listen to it a lot, but while these recordings of course add voice, make it possible to absorb information while doing other things as well as make it available at all, there’s so much more to sound. I miss more podcasts where the sound is the point itself; theatre of the mind and all that…

[DK] The Prince of Darkness laver en KB

¥ her er offeret mig.

[DK] Homoprins

Det er synd, og er bl.a. aktuelt i George Clooneys fine lille film Good night, and good luck.
